MORATIWA MEDICINAL CANNABIS

LESOTHO

Our purpose is to support a pivotal change towards plant-based, safe medicinal ingredients. Our ultimate aim is to foster a healthier global community and a healthier planet.

Our vision is to partner with one or more leading players globally in building a best-of-breed medicinal cannabis cultivation and processing facility in Lesotho

Why Lesotho

The Kingdom of Lesotho has a centuries old heritage of cannabis cultivation and use.

It introduced legislation to legalise the cultivation and use of medicinal cannabis in 2008. In 2017 Lesotho became the first African country to legally export medicinal cannabis.

The government sees cannabis cultivation and processing to be a key element of economic growth.

The legislative framework for the regulation of medicinal cannabis is mature and stable.

Lesotho provides a pristine natural environment that is perfectly suited to the cultivation and production of medicinal cannabis.

The natural environment features

  • Moderate temperatures throughout the year
  • High altitude: the average elevation of Lesotho is 2,255 metres (7,400 feet).
  • Natural clear mountain water: groundwater and a network of rivers. Annual mean rainfall averages 700 to 800mm (28 to 31 inches).
  • Soil quality: fertile soil, uncontaminated by pesticides
  • Clean, unpolluted air
  • Zero light pollution
  • 300 days of sunshine annually

Besides the ideal natural environment, Lesotho offers low labour, electricity and water costs. It is estimated that production costs in Lesotho are 10% to 20% of production costs in Canada, US and Europe.

About Moratiwa

Moratiwa Pty Ltd is a company registered in Lesotho. It holds a licence as a Prohibited Drug Operator from the Lesotho government. The licence permits Moratiwa to cultivate, manufacture, supply and distribute, export, import and transit medicinal cannabis. The licence is valid for ten years and is renewable on demonstration of a viable operation.

Moratiwa has secured the use of 115 hectares (284 acres) of land to rollout this project. The company has built strong ties with local communities to gain their support for the project.

It reminds us of our purpose to contribute to healthier communities and planet. It will support the relationships we intend to foster with our business partners and investors. It will guide us in our uncompromising approach to conducting our business ethically.

The company is a subsidiary of Rebamoratiwa Property Investment Holdings (RPIH). This group of companies develops, owns and manages commercial property assets. It’s focus is on retail properties such as shopping centres, mostly in emerging markets.

RPIH has built significant turnkey expertise in land and property development. Rural community upliftment is a strong value of this business.

The directors see enormous value in a sustainable cannabis cultivation facility in Lesotho and aims to partner in the development of such a facility. Their vision includes a healing centre and potentially other community upliftment projects.

RPIH’s founder, Mike Masemola, started working on his vision to build a Cannabis-based business in Lesotho several years ago. The establishment of Moratiwa Lesotho as a special purpose vehicle company to house his interests in the medical cannabis sector is a significant milestone. Andrew McGregor brings extensive project management, strategy development and business development experience to the team.
